McPherson County has a housing shortage and families in crises are the ones who are hit the hardest when they experience trauma. At this time, a family who is facing eviction, because of the loss of a spouse, a health crises or a job loss will find themselves with limited resources. They can sleep in a car, a tent, a hotel or on someone’s couch, but a safe place does not exist. The Oak Harbor cottages will fill that void. No longer will families be separated or forced to live in inappropriate spaces. The families will be moved into a fully furnished two bedroom home and will have up to 90 days to work with a case manager while they determine the needs of the family. This may include counseling, job training, or educational opportunities as they develop a plan to move forward and become stable. Furthermore, MHC has additional programs that will move the family into permanent housing once their needs are determined and appropriate resources have been identified.
Funds will be used to purchase building materials for the cottages. Although many businesses and churches have already donated for this purpose, there are 10 homes to be built and more are needed. Many technicians are offering their services to the project in areas such as framing, shingling, electrical, HVAC and plumbing. However, this does not cover the cost of materials. Some heart-felt donations have come from individuals as they share their stimulus checks. The community is seeing the need and responding in a very positive way. Lack of resources forces these families to seek alternative forms of shelter that is not conducive to becoming self-sufficient and productive. These 10 cottages will provide shelter for nine families in need plus an on-sight manager to oversee the facility and a case manager who will provide resources and a plan to move forward. This project will offer a healthy start to remediation of this pressing need.
These cottages are permanent structures and the Coalition is determined to continue with on sight management. Counselling, job training and budget planning education are available on an ongoing basis. As development continues, one can see even more cottages being built although this space will be used up with these 10 units. The need never goes away and neither does this service. The Coalition’s dream is that these impoverished families will accept and be encouraged to build upon the “boost” given to them to strive towards a financially stable and productive life in society. We are proud that The Executive Director, Project Manager and On-Sight Managers are policyholders of State Farm in our community and that they are willing to serve others to make our community better.
