City Prepares for Street Improvements

Paving the Future-FINAL

On November 7, McPherson voters renewed a half-cent sales tax to support street improvements. “The City of McPherson thanks McPherson residents for supporting Paving the Future,” said Street Commissioner Larry Wiens. “Residential street improvements will continue uninterrupted due to voters supporting the tax renewal.”

McPherson street infrastructure is primarily funded by a half-cent sales tax, which was originally instituted by public vote in 2010 and generates approximately $1.5 million annually. More than 25 street projects have been completed during the past seven years using tax dollars collected. The half-cent sales tax renewal will extend resources for street infrastructure through December 31, 2030.

Public Works Director Jeff Woodward emphasized the half-cent sales tax renewal allows for responsible budget planning and uninterrupted street repairs. “While the Public Works Department generally selects projects based on the Cost Benefit Factor (CBF) formula, city officials gathered public input about future projects to be funded by the sales tax renewal,” he noted. Based on data collected from July 17 to October 1, 2017, the City Commission is committed to completing at least two projects per City quadrant.
