Mayor Brown presented a Proclamation of Appreciation to the McPherson Scottish Society at the March 6 City Commission meeting. Specifically, he recognized the organization’s years of service representing the City as host of the McPherson Scottish Festival. The Scottish Society recently announced the annual event will be discontinued due to increased expenses and limited attendance.
The Scottish Festival originated as a small event featuring Highland Games and Scottish bands. During its 23-year history, other activities were added including fencing, dancing, concessions and sheep dog demonstrations. In 2016, the Scottish Society broadened the festival’s scope to include other cultures along with a name change to McPherson Festival of Cultures.
“The Society continues in existence and they will have more things to do in the future,” commented Mayor Brown. “The only thing that has ended is the festival.”
